JUST a few days before the memorial of her late husband, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has answered the Lord’s call.
Mrs Mwanawasa was rushed to Maina Soko Military Hospital yesterday, where she was admitted after a short illness.
Confirming her passing, family spokesperson Stanley Kakubo expressed deep sadness and sorrow over her death.
“It is with the deepest and most profound sadness and sorrow that the Mwanawasa and Kakubo families announce the untimely passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and former First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, Mrs. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa.
Mrs Mwanawasa passed away this evening at Maina Soko Medical Centre after a short illness,” he said.
Mr Kakubo stated that the funeral gathering will be held at her residence in Roma Park, Lusaka.
Maureen Mwanawasa was also a lawyer and the widow of Levy Mwanawasa, the third President of Zambia, who served from 2002 until his death in 2008.
President Hakainde Hichilema also confirmed Mrs Mwanawasa’s death in a Facebook post.
“It is with deep shock and sorrow that we have learned of the passing of the former First Lady, Mrs Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa,” he said.
The President called on the nation to unite in prayer and support her family during this difficult time.
